The Geezer – Best Film

Following the traditions the Oscars the Dr has decided to do his own awards for films of great cinematic and artistic achievement. The current winner of the Geezer for best film goes to …  ‘Ladri di Biciclette’ (the Bicycle Thief) – 1948/1949. If you’ve not seen this amazing piece of cinematic story-telling by director Vittorio De Sica, don’t just rush out and get it. Instead, put it on your ‘to rent’ list. You’ll need to be in the mood.

And the Stinker is …

I’ve just seen the 5 finalists in the Berlinale short film festival from the category known as the Talent Campus. These were all very well produced shorts. Big budgets and big crews. And for the most part they were interesting, artistic, and stunning – both in sound and imagery. I’ll go into more detail about the good ones in another post, but at this point I’ll focus on the stinker: ‘The Astronaut on the Roof’ by Sergi Portabella.

Secret Life of Sound 1

The workshop on sound design for film at the Berlinale this year was one of my favorites. Find a scene in a movie where there is no dialogue, then turn off the sound and watch. Sound design is crucial. One of the things I loved about the advice from director Peter Strickland is to remember that sound is more than music or footsteps.
