actually very true … I played guitar/lead guitar in churches for 12 years (never in that time did any of the churches buy me a single pick or pack of strings) and I played full sets with several successful Christian artist including paul baloche and as was stated in the piece … all is so contrived in Christian music (maybe not at the level with baloche but everyday churches yes) and not ever truly the creative process as it should be explored . oftentimes the music is mismanaged by those with agendas ego and narcissism and while those things may b tolerable when done in the light of giving gifts talents time and treasure for God at some point the true creative artist are left to fill in th cookie cutter mindset of emulating other christian artist songs note for note (maybe a tiny amount of improv allowed) measure for measure …so that the pastors wife can come up to do the announcement for kids church and the old folks who want to get out to Lubys before the Sunday lunch rush all while telling visitors that walk in the door …”oh were not like other churches; we love ya brother”. if i hear another church tell me they “love me brother” im gonna punch them in their mouth as cynically I don’t think when they are at Lubys they would care if i was ran over by a semi that very moment lol. perhaps the podcast was tongue in cheek but the creative dialogue that is portrayed in the essence of moments is rarely ever un contrived and real …thus i had to leave playin in churches as i felt it was sapping the essence from which i began the creative process and gift that I feel was given to my by God to use …somehow… that is music
Mark,
Thanks for this comment. So sorry that you’ve also experienced this dark side of churchianity, but then, i know so many people who have been treated like crap by the institutions (Christian Music or church-business). It is important to find people we can hang with who can encourage us and we them, but this concept has been wrongly used to push every follower of Christ to join an institution. I just don’t go for that any more. Years ago my wife and i helped form a ‘every second Friday night’ meeting with friends. We just ate together and discussed real issues. Was the best Church experience i’ve ever had. It took me a long time to feel an inner release from trying to please the bozos in church leadership. It is the issue of pleasing man rather than God. I know many artists/Christians who have faced the same issue. I hope you have found the path forward in your creative expression. God is love. God is the creator of life. If we walk with Him we should be speaking about life, love, justice, sorrow, etc. Institutions want to say that we serve God by serving them. That’s a basket full of dookie! We serve God by doing what we were created to do in His Spirit. We serve God by serving all people, not institutions. Play on man, play on. In whatever way you can express life – do it. Don’t let the idiots, or anything they have ever done to you, continue to sap the essence of the creative process from you. Let your heart be free. Do that thing that you were meant to do!
Praise God for all He is doing. Thanks!
